Progress or die! DCC unveils models News

The unveiling of the September 2008 Awatea St stadium model is not not the first time the DCC has treated the public to scale models of its grand schemes. On 17 September 1970 plans to demolish the municipal chambers in favour of a new civic complex were unveiled. This ODT photo shows (from left) K. J. Marlow, G. K. Armstrong and the architect W. F. Hesson. Eventually the present library and a civic centre (not the one pictured) were built. Naysayers thwarted demolition of the municipal chambers. Just imagine how glorious Dunedin would be today if it weren’t for the naysayers.

Overlay rejected News

Another 1970s scheme that never saw the light of day was a concrete overlay on the Octagon - a sort of pedestrian flyover with traffic underneath. Something similar (but larger, obviously) was built in Birmingham in the 1960s - the Bullring. It was a disaster; the public disliked going underground to the roads and shops. It has recently been replaced at a cost of £800 million. The moral of the story? BEWARE THE OVERLAY!
